Located in Oakland’s trendy Uptown District, Stag’s Lunchette serves sandwiches of house-cured meats that were raised in a cruelty-free fashion. Stag’s is owned by Alexeis Filipello, who also runs Dogwood, a popular bar located a few blocks away. Sandwiches range from $9-10. For the pastrami sandwich, Filipello cures top-quality beef brisket for two to three weeks, then smokes it for ten hours and cuts off most of the fat so the sandwich isn’t fatty. The pastrami is thinly sliced and wonderfully seasoned on the Reuben, which is served with homemade sauerkraut, house dressing and Gruyere cheese on levain, instead of the traditional rye, bread. The Croque Monsieur features thinly sliced pork loin with melted Gruyere, drizzled with a fresh tarragon Mornay sauce. The menu also has a variety of salads, a daily soup, such as beef and onion with farro, and seasonal vegetable sides. Stag’s is open from 8am-3pm on weekdays.
